Education and Prevention Programs

We have differents programs for the whole family. All our programs are  available only in Spanish.

Our Programs

The Mission of the Latino Health Organization is to diminish health-disparities faced by the Hispanic/Latino Community, through education, advocacy and leadership.


 
 

De Mujeres Program

A program that targets adult women to prepare, support, and empower them as enabler who will promote positive changes in themselves, family, partners, and children, institutional and organizational life. 

 

Bienvenido Program

Seeks to reduce reliance on alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs for individuals at risk for abuse and dependence due to stresses associated with immigrant traumas and ongoing marginalized community social status.

 

Operation Fit Kids

Is an educational program offered in schools for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders and consists of seven lessons. The topics covered include Activity pyramid, Food pyramid, importance of your heart and repetitive exercise, what to drink for proper hydration, healthy snacks, walking, strengthening exercises, benefits of stretching exercises, food labels, reduce calories in fast-food meals, importance of eating breakfast, healthy active lifestyle, and healthy eating habits.

 
 

Your Life. Your Story Summer Camp

YLYS is an intervention study to increase resilience and self-mastery in Latino adolescents, with the aim of reducing and/or preventing depressive symptoms. The program is evidence-based, interdisciplinary, and community-based. It is a yearlong program that just completed its first phase, which consisted of a one-week summer camp where Latino youth went through a resilience-building curriculum (WhyTry), followed by a selection of art and movement based activities to develop goals for the future and identify barriers and opportunities; additionally, each teen was paired with a young adult (IUPUI student) mentor. The second phase of the program includes meeting once per month through May 2015; each meeting will focus on various components from the camp.

 

National Diabetes Prevention Program

The National Diabetes Prevention Program encourages collaboration among federal agencies, community-based organizations, employers, insurers, health care professionals, academia, and other stakeholders to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes among people with pre-diabetes in the United States. This program is in collaboration with Indiana Minority Health Coalition & Black Women Health Imperative.

 

Diabetes Empowerment Education Program

Diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy.

 
 

Tobacco prevention and Cessation program

We provide education about how prevent initiation of tobacco use by Latinos youth, reduction and protection from secondhand smoke, distribute information and provide on-site referrals to 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Acculturative Stress in Hispanic Adolescents

Relations to Mental Health: study was to develop a better understanding of the relationship between acculturative stress and mental and behavioral health outcomes of Hispanic adolescents living in the Indianapolis area, as well as potential mediators of this relationship.  This greater understanding will inform the design of programs aimed at improving outcomes in this group and therefore reducing the disparities observed. After we finished the study, we created a summer camp called Your Life, Your study.

 

Healthy Mother = Healthy Family

 It is an educational program for mothers that want to better their lives and the lives of their families. They are going to learn how to improve their health and the health of their family. Strengthen their relationships, especially with their children and become a leader in the community.
